|A Brief History of St. Mary’s Catholic Parish, Chito
St. Mary’s Catholic Parish, Chito was created on 22nd June, 1997 out of St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish Zaki-Biam. It was the first parish created out of the mother parish after All Saints Parish, Ugba.
The parish started as Umough zone among the eight Zones which made up St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish, Zaki-Biam. Umough zone had a total number of forty-three churches (43) with her headquarter at Umough village, Ukande in Adzendeshi Ward with effect from the pronouncement made by Bishop A.A.
Bishop Usuh of Makurdi Diocese declared that only zones sited at settlement areas shall be viable to be granted parishes. There aroused the need to drift the Headquarters from Umough to Chito. And the changes effected as St. Mary’s Quasi Parish with her Headquarters at Chito.
On 11th November 1995, Rev. Fr. Peter Asan was posted to the zone to direct, safeguard; control all administrative functions in order to meet up with the conditions for the creation of a Parish. The parish was officially created on 22nd June, 1997 by Bishop A.A. Usuh and Revd Fr Peter Asan was made the first Parish Priest.
The parish has a total number of eight (8) zones and fifty-eight (58) outstations.
