A Brief History of Holy Spirit Parish, Sankera
The present Holy Spirit Parish, Sankera, started as a small Church called Roman Catholic Mission (RCM), Nenshi-Sankera around 1964 by a C.R.I Teacher called Mr. Baka. Later in 1966, Mr. Baka requested that the C.R.I School be moved to the main road at a site presently occupied by Ngenev Community Secondary School, Sankera. By 1976, the C.R.I teacher handed over the Church activities to one Mr. Athanasius Yoosu, who was the first Church Leader and was answerable to the priest at St. Anthony’s Parish, Zaki-Biam. In the year 2002 (22nd February), His Excellency, Most Revd Athanasius Usuh, the Bishop of Makurdi Diocese approved an independent Mission for Sankera and handed it over to the Holy Ghost Congregation (Spiritans). The pioneer priest in charge of the new mission was Rev. Fr. Moses Dzever, CSSp. Holy Spirit Quasi Parish was raised to the status of a parish by Bishop Usuh on the 4th June, 2006 and Rev. Fr. Vitalis Ioryue CSSp was appointed Parish Priest. For an effective primary evangelization and pastoral administration, the parish is divided into five (5) Zones with a total number of thirty-seven (37) churches. As regards school apostolate, the parish has three (3) Nursery/Primary schools located at Sankera, Tine-Nune and Adieku. |
